I've been making banners lately for my Orc bosses (above), and an online contest themed around freehand banners got announced by @goobinsgitz on Instagram. This gave me the idea to share my banner crafting methods in a step-by-step. Perhaps it will help you out!

This was the method I use to make such banners from scratch. For those who don't have all these specific materials and tools lying around (I know I didn't when I was a beginner), I have another version of the tutorial: one that goes for similar results with extra basic stuff.

What's your method? What would you do to further improve these? Let me know in the comments.

Good guides. I tend to use thin strips of masking tape for the fabric around the pole. Sometimes I will just use masking tape for the whole thing, and add “gaps” in the tape half way down to create the loops over the cross beam. Then fold the tape together. The tape takes paint nicely, and its rough texture is good for Orc or Barbarian banners because it looks really rough-spun.
One big benefit is that you can “pose” the banner; give it some creases, make it look like the breeze is messing with it, etc. With it being doubled up, and sticking to itself, it’s also easy to punch some holes in and add threads if you wanted some dangling tassels or whatnot
