These are Straw Children, critters from the Folk Horrors miniature set released through a Kickstarter in collab with Andrew May of Meridian Miniatures. Didn’t have a world in mind when I sculpted the minis, but now something like that is starting to form in the back of my skull. I’ll be exploring it further in the future.

I hadn’t given any attention to Folk Horrors since the campaign, as I had other projects taking precedence. I’ve been happy to have seen many KS backers post their painted and/or converted sets on Instagram, though! Now I took a bit of my free time to sculpt and paint a few more Straw Children in order to have a larger group, with a bit of variety in size and detail. And I built them dwellings where they can live.

The fuzzy hollow structures were inspired by the massive communal nests built in trees by sociable weavers, a species of bird found in Africa. You can see a lovely example in the photograph below. This is actually a look at the nest from underneath; the circular entrances are found only on the bottom side of the structure.

I documented the process for those who wish to build something similar. The build itself is fairly quick and simple, but it involves rather long drying times in between steps.

Did you back the Folk Horrors KS?

How did you like the minis?

Would you be interested in seeing another round of similar creatures produced? Let me know in the comments.

As always, big thanks to all of Gardens of Hecate’s patrons! Your support is sincerely appreciated. Oh heck….......little inhabitants for a little village.
Now I want to see more of them and have to paint my Kickstarter Minis.

Absolutely, I’d love to see another set of Folk Horrors! I’m just about to post my first few painted models, filling a variety of roles in Dracula’s America.
These straw nests are just perfect.

Oddly cute little guys, and the inspiration for the hives is quite unique!
